Teaching Cyber Security Awareness and Digital Literacy to Adult Learners

As digital technologies become increasingly embedded in everyday life, adult learners need the knowledge and confidence to navigate the online world safely and securely. This session explores the changing education landscape and the growing importance of cyber security in adult learning. Participants will gain practical strategies to strengthen their own cyber safety, support learners to build essential digital and cyber security skills and apply tools and resources that can be used across a range of adult learning settings. Topics covered include:

  • Reflecting on the changing education and digital landscape.
  • Recognising the cyber security needs and challenges facing adult learners.
  • Learning practical strategies to help themselves and others stay safe online.
  • Exploring tools, resources and approaches that support learners to build cyber awareness, confidence and digital resilience.
  • An introduction to the Adult Learning Australia (ALA) online cyber security training portal.

Liz Bonner


Liz is the Chair of the Australian Neighbourhood Houses and Centres Association (ANHCA) and CEO of Cloverdale Community Centre in Geelong, Victoria.

A long-time advocate for grassroots community development, Liz’s background spans education and not-for-profit leadership. Deeply involved in the Neighbourhood House sector, Liz has contributed to governance at local, state and national levels, including serving on the ANHCA Board since 2022.

She is passionate about the power of community-led action and strengthening the role of Neighbourhood Houses and Community Centres as vital social infrastructure across Australia.

 

Nicola Innes


Nicola is the Learning Projects Manager at Adult Learning Australia, where she supports and advocates for Adult Community Education providers through the development of learning resources and training.

She has worked across the community services sector for most of her career, supporting adults to build foundational skills through both formal and informal learning pathways. Her roles have included Youth Worker, Community Education Worker, Literacies Worker and TAFE teacher.

Currently, Nicola is also undertaking a PhD on youth transitions through Work Integrated Social Enterprise (WISE), with her case study focusing on a community education provider where WISE is embedded.

Jason Spear


Jason has worked in the Learn Local sector for several years, specialising in digital literacy training for adult learners. He is passionate about digital inclusion and currently works across Melbourne’s inner west, supporting adult learners to engage safely and confidently online. Jason also serves as a Digital Mentor to his peers across the Adult and Community Education sector.ne.

Jason is contributing to the ALA online cyber security learning module. His involvement reflects both his strong digital capabilities and his commitment to building confidence and capacity within the sector’s digital environment.
