Since she left school at 16 Lauren has been on a merry go round of different jobs in the past decade from supermarket cashier to spray painter, and heaps in between. She`s never able to settle or find a job she could commit to. But all that`s changed since she did a sheep shearing class. It just goes to show that #LearningChangesLives. You can hear Lauren and a bunch of other inspiring speakers in our recording of the #ALW2021 launch.

📚 To mark Adult Learners Week, prisoners from Casuarina Prison have shared how education has transformed their lives by producing a special book. 📚
Prisoners also developed and presented speeches, performed traditional dances and created artwork to share with their peers.
Improving literacy and numeracy can build self-esteem, inspiring prisoners to continue to study and seek out opportunities when they are released.
Learn more about the week and growth opportunities with the video below and with the link in our bio.

Taking a traditionally face-to-face course into the online learning space has it`s challenges.
And then sometimes, there are amazing perks!
Last Friday, after taking a break during the morning PDC (Permaculture Design Course) Zoom session, the tutor, Beck Lowe, returned a little late. Because she was checking in on her 2 nanny goats that were giving birth to these little cuties!

Imagine a hobby that could help with the isolation of this pandemic? Library staff member, Joel, highlights his learning journey via the game Dungeons and Dragons. This in-person table game played since the 1970s has caught attention from recent TV shows.
In the age of COVID, the ‘table’ has gone virtual. Online sites guide you all the way. There are also heaps of places to connect with interested players online. Joel says, “When we eventually get out of this lockdown, you can even borrow a physical copy of the D&D game books from our collection!”
Access Gale databases via your library card to guide your learning about this game and the way it has pivoted for lockdown here: www.library.camden.nsw.gov.au/e-resources/eresearch/
Access the library eComics to read Critical Role`s hit comic series, based on the wildly popular live-play game here: www.library.camden.nsw.gov.au/e-resources/ecomics/

Pines Learning are pleased to announce an EAL student recipient of a Learning Changes Lives Foundation scholarship, Maryam.
Arriving from Iran in 2019 , Maryam described hearing Australian English spoken as foreign to her ears as Japanese might have been. Here we are now with Maryam not only assisting her son with home-schooling but able to listen to the all-important daily press conferences, enabling her to keep up with important news and be able to speak with confidence, clarity and forethought in her high level speaking and listening class. As well, like so many, Maryam is learning online navigating Zoom English classes and using Breakout rooms to get to know other students better.
Maryam has an infectious enthusiasm which has endeared her to classmates and her teacher alike and plans for her future which include re-kindling her love for working as a software designer, as she did in Iran. This scholarship will assist in Maryam reaching her goals and Pines Learning wishes her the very best in attaining them. Well Done to a very worthy recipient.

action, adventure and acquiring new skills. This course enabled me to gain
employment in Outdoor Education and I’m now able to work in incredible locations, delivering fun activities to school students, and get paid for it!

Before graduating from Skillsets for Successful Tenancies, new mother, Rachel was having difficulty securing a rental property.
“When I was applying around the real estates, I could never get a place,” she explains.
Rachel completed the two-day course delivered by the Tenancy Skills Institute, where she learnt core skills for successful tenancies including communication, tenant rights and responsibilities, cleaning and budgeting.
With the help of her Tenancy Skills Institute certificate, Rachel’s application for a private rental was accepted.
As she explains, she did not expect the qualification to have the impact that it did on her application.
“I didn’t think it was going to help as much as what it has. When you give them your certificate, they look at you differently.”
After securing a rental, Rachel says she now lives without the worry of where she and child will stay.
“For me and my baby to be in our own place rather than worrying about where we’re going to live - it’s a much better life. We’re stable now.”
Dates for upcoming courses can be found through the Tenancy Skills Institute website. To enrol or for more information visit www.tenancyskills.com.au/skillsets or call the Tenancy Skills Institute team on 07 3413 6997.

In celebration of #alw2021 here’s a little update on the PICAL Community Caravan, a project that started life as a Learn Local introductory construction course. Purchased back in 2020 the old food van had been dormant for quite a while but the bones were solid & we could see the potential for the van to once again be a great asset for our local community. Huge thanks to our students Jono, Jess, Lyndon, Kelly Tegan, Summer & Kim for sticking with us through the bad weather & lockdowns. There’s plenty left to do but with the help of the students, some amazing local businesses & Bass Coast Shire Council you can follow the story here & on our Facebook page right up until the final reveal👌
