QLD welcomes investment in building stronger communities

Community organisations  have welcomed the Bligh Government’s commitment to triple investment in the Community Centre Infrastructure Fund, which gives community groups funds to build halls, clubhouses and other buildings.

CEO of the Benevolent Society, Anne Hollonds said investing in facilities like Men’s Sheds would benefit the whole community.

“We know from research that people are happier, healthier and more confident when they feel connected with their communities, so today’s announcement really will have a positive impact on people’s lives,” Ms Hollonds said.

“Facilities like Men’s Sheds provide a vitally important space where locals can come together and meet other members of the community, volunteer, learn new skills and share their expertise.

“The Labrador Men’s Shed in particular, which Premier Bligh today visited today, is a great example of how investment in community facilities has wide-ranging benefits.

“The Labrador Men’s Shed has developed close links with The Benevolent Society’s Labrador Child and Family Centre, another thriving community centre which runs parenting classes, playgroups and other activities for families with young children.

“As a result, local men now regularly volunteer to run the barbecue at family fun days, make toys for local children and even act as mentors and role models for local children who don’t have a father figure.

“I have no doubt that investing in building additional community facilities like these will have real benefits for more people in more places.”
