Funding to celebrate Queensland Seniors Week

Community groups across Queensland are sharing in $125,000 for activities that celebrate older people and challenge stereotypes during Seniors Week 2012.

Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, Tracy Davis, said it was important for Queenslanders to recognise older citizens’ achievements and contribution to our communities.

“Seniors have spent decades doing their bit for family, community and the economy,” she said.

“They continue to contribute enormously to this state through their vast wisdom, skills and experience.

“This funding will allow communities to hold Seniors Week activities that celebrate older people and their contributions, and challenge stereotypes about ageing.”

Ms Davis said the Newman Government was committed to making Queensland an inclusive state that recognised the needs of seniors.

“By 2021, there will be almost one million people aged 65 or over living in Queensland – almost twice as many as in 2006,” she said.

Seniors Week 2012 will be held from Saturday 18 August to Sunday 26 August 2012.

“We want to see people of all ages and all backgrounds getting involved in Seniors Week right across the state, from regional and remote areas to the cities,” Ms Davis said.

“Activities will include cooking classes, story-telling and nostalgia, multi-cultural expos, art and craft displays, morning teas and sporting activities.”
