Empowering Learners through a Strength-Based Approach to Generic Skills

Understand Generic Skills: Learn about core generic skills such as self-management, teamwork, problem-solving, planning and organizing, and initiative & enterprise, along with their history and relevance in today’s education and employment landscapes.

The Role in Education & Employment: Discover where these skills fit into modern educational practices and the workforce, and why they are increasingly valued by employers and educators.

Empowering Learners Through Strengths: Explore how focusing on a learner’s existing generic skills, rather than only addressing weaknesses, can build confidence, self-awareness, and set a strong foundation for further learning and growth.


Suzy McKenna

Suzy McKenna was Principal Project Officer for the Strengthening the Australian Qualifications Framework project from 2009 to 2011. She was previously the National Project Director of Reframing the Future, the national professional development and change management program for the Australian vocational education and training sector.

Since ‘retiring’ she has undertaken numerous research activities and projects nationally and internationally that contribute to, inform and promote the development of tertiary education policy and practice. She has authored or co-authored numerous publications including Professional Judgement in VET and RPL – Done Well.

Recently she developed the Employability Skills Initial Check Kit for the Victorian Adult, Community and Further Education (ACFE) Board.
