In 2023, volunteer literacy tutor, Amanda Wilson, received a Gallaugher Bequest Churchill Fellowship to research how tutors can reduce psychological barriers to adult learning.

Amanda visited five countries, 25 literacy service providers, and interviewed 90 passionate adult literacy professionals.

Amanda will share the findings from her research during this webinar. She will also outline the practical guide she has developed for adult literacy and numeracy service providers, tutors, industry bodies and education policy makers.

Amanda Wilson

Amanda has been a volunteer adult literacy tutor with Libraries Tasmania for 12 years.

In 2023, she was awarded the Gallaugher Bequest Churchill Fellowship to study adult literacy education methods to help learners reduce feelings of educational fear. Her project report combines the evidence-informed experience and skills of 25 organisations and professionals from New Zealand, Canada, USA, UK and Ireland based on interviews and teaching observations conducted in May, June and July 2024. The findings show that when we tutor in a way that reduces educational fear, every adult literacy learner can benefit, from the most fearful to the most confident.

Amanda holds a Bachelor of Business (Hons) from RMIT University and enjoyed a national and international career in communications and project management before establishing a family farm in North West Tasmania in 2012.
